Ontario residents experiencing the high cost of living received $200 rebate cheques from the Ford government. However, a technical issue with RBC caused some cheques to be incorrectly returned, leading to delays in disbursement.
Earlier this month, the Ford government initiated the distribution of $200 rebate cheques to Ontario residents. Premier Doug Ford stated that these rebates are intended to alleviate the financial burden imposed by the high cost of living , which includes the federal carbon tax and elevated interest rates. However, a technical glitch encountered by the Royal Bank of Canada (RBC) resulted in some eligible individuals not receiving their rebates promptly.
RBC acknowledged the issue, explaining that during the cheque verification process, a small number of legitimate rebates were mistakenly returned. They emphasized that this was an isolated incident and that the matter has since been resolved.RBC assured the public that they have implemented stringent measures to authenticate cheques cashed for deposit, guaranteeing their legitimacy and delivery to the intended recipients. They stated that their protocols, while designed to prevent fraud, can occasionally lead to legitimate cheques being flagged and returned, as was the case with a limited number of rebates. RBC expressed their sincere apologies for any inconvenience caused by this technical error.To be eligible for the rebate, individuals must have been 18 years or older and residents of Ontario on December 31, 2023. They cannot be bankrupt or incarcerated and must have filed their 2023 Income Tax and Benefits Return by December 31, 2024. Additionally, recipients of the Canada Child Benefit will receive a separate $200 cheque for each eligible child under 18.
