While the Ontario government aims to provide financial relief to its residents through $200 rebate cheques, some individuals have encountered difficulties cashing their payments. Issues appear to be linked to RBC's cheque processing system, causing delays and concerns for those affected.
The Ontario government is distributing $200 rebate cheques to approximately 15 million Ontarians in late January and early February. However, some residents have encountered difficulties when attempting to cash their cheques, leading to concerns about potential processing issues. A Toronto woman, Krystine Newton, shared her experience on Facebook, stating that her cheque 'bounced' and warning others that they might face similar problems.
Newton received her cheque on January 21st and attempted to deposit it through her Simplii Financial mobile app. Initially, the process appeared successful, but two days later, she discovered her account was overdrawn and the $200 cheque had not been credited.Newton contacted her bank, Simplii Financial, and was informed that payment on the cheque had been stopped. She subsequently reached out to Ontario's Ministry of Finance, providing her personal information and awaiting a callback. Despite this, she has yet to receive a follow-up call. A spokesperson for Finance Minister Peter Bethlenfalvy stated that the department is aware of the problems encountered with some cheques and attributed the issue to RBC. Andrew Block, an RBC spokesperson, confirmed that a 'handful' of Ontarians experienced their cheques being 'returned' after depositing them. He explained that RBC employs various authentication measures to ensure cheque legitimacy and intended recipient. Block stated that, on rare occasions, these protocols might lead to a legitimate cheque being returned, which occurred in this instance with a small number of cheques. He assured that the issue has now been resolved, and affected customers have received their $200.RBC, one of the financial institutions engaged to issue cheques on behalf of the Ontario government, processed a significant portion of the rebates. This means individuals like Newton, who bank with Simplii Financial, were still impacted by the issue with RBC's processing. While RBC did not disclose the exact number of individuals affected, they estimated it to be between 150 and 200, and they do not anticipate further problems. The Ford government's announcement in October outlined their plan to send $200 cheques to every Ontarian aged 18 and above, as a measure to alleviate the cost of living burden. Parents are also entitled to an additional $200 per child. Opposition leaders have criticized the government's decision to send these cheques to all Ontarians, regardless of their income level. Eligibility criteria included filing a 2023 income tax return, not being incarcerated in 2024, and not being bankrupt. An estimated 12.5 million adults and 2.5 million children are expected to receive these payments, with the program costing the treasury an estimated $3 billion. The overall administrative expenses, including mailing costs, are still being finalized by the Ministry of Finance and will be publicly available later in the year
