Taking heat over the unexpected nomination defeat of one of its few Black MPPs, Ontario’s NDP will review its policy of allowing sitting members to be challenged for the right to run in elections, says party leader Andrea Horwath.

“This has caused some concern,” Horwath said Tuesday after others in the party’s five-member Black caucus took to Twitter on the weekend to criticize the NDP for failing to protect first-term MPP Kevin Yarde in Brampton North. But the review will not come until after the June 2 provincial election and there’s no turning back the clock on the results from the Brampton North NDP riding association’s vote, which was won by Sandeep Singh.

Yarde spoke out about the policy on Monday when he indicated he is keeping his political options open, including the possibility of running as an independent. Another member of the Black caucus, Beaches-East York MPP Rima Berns-McGown, expressed her frustration on social media.
