The years-long effort to end capital punishment in Ohio, which has already been growing, may soon get an unprecedented boost, as the state’s largest anti-abortion group is considering throwing its weight behind a repeal bill.

Senate Minority Leader Nickie Antonio, a Lakewood Democrat, speaks Tuesday at a Statehouse news conference unveiling another attempt to repeal Ohio's death penalty. Behind Antonio stands state Sens. Stephen Huffman, a Tipp City Republican; Michele Reynolds, a Republican from suburban Columbus; and Hearcel Craig, a Columbus Democrat.

Senate President Matt Huffman of Lima and House Speaker Jason Stephens of Lawrence County have vast control over which bills pass their respectively chambers, meaning they would have to either support a death penalty repeal or at least stand aside to let it pass. Stephens also said he personally supports the death penalty, though he equivocated when asked if capital punishment should be abolished in Ohio.

At a Statehouse press conference Tuesday to unveil the latest anti-death penalty bill, state Sen. Nickie Antonio, a Lakewood Democrat, noted that polls have shown the public increasingly supports ending capital punishment, and a growing number of lawmakers have followed suit. “The public is worried about rising crime and increasing violence in our communities,” said Louis Tobin, the OPAA’s executive director, in a statement. “And instead of finding ways to increase public safety, help us secure justice for victims, and find a pathway to justice for the victims of Ohio’s most horrific crimes, we have legislators who want to cut Ohio’s worst criminals a break. It’s unfortunate, it’s dangerous, and it’s out of touch.
