Sgt. Mike Martin said he became alarmed when a fellow officer arrived at the Oak Bay apartment of Andrew Berry, accused of murdering his two daughters, and couldn’t locate the dad.

A police officer testified Wednesday that he had “great concerns” when one of his colleagues went to the home of a man now accused of murdering his two daughters and could not locate the father or the children.

Martin, the watch commander of the Christmas Day shift, said he dispatched an officer, Const. Peter Ulanowski, to Andrew Berry’s home to see whether he could locate the two girls and return them to their mother. “That was the most alarming of the factors. I knew Mr. Berry wasn’t with any family members. He was unaccounted for. I couldn’t raise Mr. Berry on the phone.”

Martin said he asked the police dispatcher to send out photos of the two girls to other police agencies in the area to have “more sets of eyes out there” to locate Berry and the two kids. “She stated that he was a good father, that he would not harm his children, he was not suicidal. Financial difficulties had caused the electricity to be shut off in his apartment, but there was still functioning heat in the apartment.”
