Blackburn, a product of Brentwood’s Heritage High, went 7-6 with a 4.28 ERA in 111.1 innings after a red-hot start that saw him go 5-0 with a 1.70 ERA in his first nine starts.
Blackburn, who has spent parts of six seasons with the A’s, set a career-high for wins. The hand ailment might help explain Blackburn’s recent struggles. Over his final five starts, Blackburn allowed 25 runs on 31 hits over 24 1/3 innings and saw his ERA go from 2.90 to 4.28.
The A’s entered Tuesday’s game riding a nine-game losing streak and are on pace for the second 100-loss season since the franchise moved to Oakand in 1968. The A’s already have used 10 starting pitchers this season, and figure to add to that total with nearly two months remaining. Blackburn’s emergence was one of the few things that has gone right for the A’s this season. But it was hardly an overnight success story for the former first-round draft pick of the Chicago Cubs.
