UIW wide receiver Darion Chafin scores off a 1-yard pass from Lindsey Scott in the Cardinals’ 35-32 loss to North Dakota State in the FCS semifinals.
“Proud of our guys, the way we fought,” outgoing UIW coach G.J. Kinne said. “This is a special group, a special team to always remember. These guys will go down in history as the best team that’s ever played at Incarnate Word.” Bison quarterback Cam Miller completed just 1 of 12 passes for 5 yards. But North Dakota State leaned on its usual smashmouth attack to start wearing down the Cardinals, scoring two rushing touchdowns over the final five minutes of the second quarter to take a 17-16 lead into the locker room.
After UIW forced a three-and-out Scott delivered the prettiest pass of the night, a 40-yard bomb dropped right to receiver Taylor Grimes at the 1-yard line. The Southland player of the year willed himself into the end zone for another score, giving UIW a 29-24 lead late in the third.
