However, while Norris has said that he is proud of Russell to have made the jump to Mercedes, he believes Russell has had to change.that “[his] manager, [his] trainer, [his parents], have always tried to keep [him] as [him], rather than try to shape [him].
The McLaren driver noted that he believes this is what has happened to Russell at Mercedes. He said growing up together “was a lot of fun” but he has noted some changes since the former F2 champion made the jump to Mercedes. Norris admitted: “He was a great person, but it is different at Mercedes – a different vibe and a different atmosphere. I just don’t see as fun a side of him. George is a great person, and I feel like the personality he had a few years ago, he would be even more popular.”
Norris did note that he doesn’t believe it is the team’s fault. Instead he believes it’s “the pressure of being with Mercedes, and having Lewis as a teammate” as it’s “never going to be an easy thing.”Norris has clarified his meaning. He spoke about F1 as a whole. He said “there’s always more pressure, more nerves” when moving to a “bigger team.” However, he believes that Russell has “lived up to that part very well.
