Despite a deadline of Feb. 8 for a transit strike, the union representing workers in the Cowichan Valley says the company has not scheduled any meetings for bargaining.
Unifor locals 333BC and 114, which represent the Cowichan Valley workers, unanimously voted in favour of strike action mid-December, then issued strike notice to the company, saying if no deal was reached by the last bus on Feb. 7, workers would hit the picket lines on Feb. 8.Transdev is the company that is contracted to operate transit in the Cowichan Valley, and is bargaining with the union.
“As I’ve said before, strike action is not something we take lightly, we want to resolve this dispute with the employer, but our members are prepared, if necessary,” Unifor National president Lana Payne said in a news release on Jan. 17.There are 44 conventional bus drivers and maintenance workers represented by Local 114 and eight HandyDART operators represented by Local 333, according to Unifor.
Though the deadline for a strike is growing near, Unifor says the company has not scheduled any bargaining meetings, despite the union being available.
