Island Health has issued an overdose advisory for Cowichan and the Southern Gulf Islands due to a spike in drug poisonings. The advisory includes resources for safer drug use and encourages people to visit their local overdose prevention service.
Drug poisonings have spiked in Cowichan and the Southern Gulf Islands , prompting an overdose advisory to be issued for these regions, according to Island Health . This comes as Island Health says in the advisory, which includes resources for users, “Drug poisonings are increasing in Cowichan and the Southern Gulf Islands .” For safer drug use, Island Health says people should visit their local overdose prevention service (OPS), which is open daily from 8 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. at 5878 York Rd.
in Duncan. People can also get their drugs checked at the OPS during those times. Island Health adds that drug users should know their tolerance, start low and go slow, stagger use with a friend, carry naloxone and use one substance at a time. According to the advisory, those who see someone overdosing should call 911 and stay with them, give one breath every five seconds and administer naloxone. Additionally, people can text “join” to 253787 to receive text alerts and text “OD” to report a drug poisoning. Speaking with CHEK News last month, Fred Cameron with SOLID Outreach, a group that helps users in Victoria, said the drug supply was as dangerous as ever. From the BC Coroners Service finds unregulated toxic drug deaths remain the leading cause of unnatural death among British Columbians aged 10 to 59, totalling more than homicides, suicides, accidents and natural disease combined.
