People will rally on Confederation Hill this Friday at an event organized by Fridays for Future's St. John's

In an email shared by Fridays for Future's St. John's, the NLESD states:

"Administrators across the province were advised of the planned St. John's protest as part of Fridays for Futures Global Climate Strike. In line with actions taken in 2019, our schools will remain open, and classes will be held as usual. However, we do respect student voice.

Fridays for Future is sending buses to requested high schools, so the protest is more accessible for students living in St. John's Metro. In an email to all students, the university's senate approved the Memorial University Students Union request for students to attend the rally without academic penalty.

"The motion is as follows: That Senate encourage academic units and professors to grant academic amnesty on September 15, 2023 to all students of all Memorial University campuses, insofar as academic units and professors remain flexible in making alternate arrangements, including rescheduling examinations and the deadlines for submission of assignments, and in adopting any other required forms of leniency for students who are absent from classes on September 15, 2023 so that they may...

"Memorial is fully supportive of students' rights to demonstrate and speak freely on all our campuses. Where possible, faculty and instructors are asked to plan for flexibility on this day."
