'Anyone who would prefer to see a new public library instead of another theatre should quickly put fingers to keyboard and tell the government so'

," Aug. 31, I enthusiastically support Mr. Lough’s contention that a new central public library in St. John’s would be a more desirable legacy project for Year of the Arts 2024 than the “mid-sized theatre” the government somehow appears to have settled on.

As he notes, new architecturally-significant buildings, fully equipped for libraries’ broad contemporary functions, have become vibrant, heavily-utilized cultural hubs in many Canadian cities, including Halifax, Calgary, Vancouver, Kitchener and, soon, Ottawa, where the Central Library will share a downtown site with Library and Archives Canada.

Libraries now are more than books: they include new technologies and technology learning centres, recording studios, workshop spaces, inclusive programming, small theatres … whatever each city identifies as its needs.LETTER: N.L.

The City of Rotterdam, Netherlands describes its new library as “a public port, a harbour” where people connect and knowledge is increased. A worthwhile aspiration for this port city. Anyone who would prefer to see a new public library instead of another theatre should quickly put fingers to keyboard and tell the government so.SaltWire Network welcomes letters on matters of public interest for publication.
