Lax oversight of New York’s elevated subway lines resulted in potentially dangerous track conditions and debris raining down onto streets, according to an inspector general’s report
Lax oversight of inspections of New York City’s elevated subway lines resulted in potentially dangerous track conditions and debris raining down onto streets, according to an inspector general’s report released Thursday.
Carolyn Pokorny, the inspector general at New York’s Metropolitan Transportation Authority, which runs the subway, found some track inspectors skipped inspections and filed false reports on several occasions. Ms. Pokorny said prior investigations by her office have found inspectors to be absent from their duties.
As a result of the most recent investigation, seven track inspectors were suspended without pay for between 60 and 100 days, including six workers who were prohibited from performing inspections for five years. MTA spokesman Aaron Donovan said Thursday the authority doesn’t tolerate safety violations and has implemented new policies to better supervise inspections.
Ms. Pokorny’s office launched the investigation in January 2020 after several instances of debris falling from elevated lines.
