New York City mayoral candidates grilled one another on policing, education and an economic recovery from the Covid-19 pandemic during the second Democratic debate of the race.
The two-hour in-person debate on Wednesday night featured heated exchanges among the eight candidates on stage, with Brooklyn Borough President Eric Adams and former presidential candidate and entrepreneur Andrew Yang facing the toughest scrutiny. Recent polls show a tight race with no clear front-runner. Some have shown slight leads for Messrs. Adams and Yang.
Mr. Adams, a former New York Police Department officer who has made public safety the focus of his campaign, was criticized by other candidates over his plans to reinstate an anticrime unit that the One candidate, Maya Wiley, a former counsel to Mayor Bill de Blasio who has campaigned on a progressive platform, also rebuked Mr. Adams for saying he would carry a gun as mayor and for encouraging others to legally arm themselves.
