“Obviously, the odds of losing your first two and winning this are fairly slim, so a good bounce back for us, for sure.”
“You always want to be Team Alberta,” said Koe, who’s earned that title seven previous times since 2010, and is looking to make it back-to-back provincial championships for the first time since 2016. “I mean, Alberta provincials is so hard to win. It’s one of my favourite events, one I’ve always kind of tried to peak for just like everyone else, so we’re not looking at it like we have another chance.
“I think it’s good to have this event back in a major centre and a place like this, I’ve never been to River Cree before. It’s a beautiful facility. COVID threw a wrench into a lot of events. I mean, our provincials last year, it was -45 C and there might have been 10 people in the stands because of COVID.
“It’s been hit and miss,” Koe said of their first season together. “We had a really good fall. Our last couple of events coming into this event were not so good, so we’re still finding our way. Everyone’s been successful in the past. Tyler’s always skipped, so he’s learning a totally new position, which is harder than most people realize. So, it’s been a bit of a process but this is a good test for us, a good event.
