Alberta’s Child and Youth Advocate called for greater cultural support for young Indigenous people and a youth drug strategy Tuesday.

Those who died ranged in age from as young as two to as old as 19. Seven died due to a medical issue, while seven more died due to confirmed or suspected drug toxicity, the youngest of whom was 13 years old. The cause of four other deaths remains under investigation.

Her report makes two recommendations calling for improved consideration and reporting on the background of Indigenous youth in care.Article content The reports notes that in 2021–22, 60 per cent of the young people served through direct advocacy services with the office of the child and youth advocate were Indigenous.
