MILTON STATION, P.E.I. — Female adult inmates in P.E.I. will soon have their own space to serve their time in custody in the new $18-million women's unit at the Provincial Correctional Centre.
The $18 million in total funding to build the 22,722-square-foot facility is comprised of $10 million from the provincial government and $8 million from the federal government's Investing in Canada Infrastructure program.Female inmates have been serving time in custody in the adjacent area with men – but separated – in the main Provincial Correctional Centre building.
The province has hired 17 full-time, permanent correctional officers as well as a correctional supervisor and a correctional program officer to work at the women’s unit. In addition to the cells, the women's unit has common seating areas with televisions as well as areas for cooking, health care, rehabilitation programs and interventions, life skills and job training and career development. There is also an enclosed green space outside for inmates.
