SUMMERVILLE, N.S. — A young man looking to provide recreational activity in rural West Hants has received the green light to proceed after a lengthy public hearing process.on May 28 so that he could open a paintball business in Summerville. The adjustments, which included increasing the buffering setbacks and moving the area of play further into the woods, helped address some of the concerns from neighbours.
“Their instinct leads them to be very vigilant; they have keen senses and are always aware of their surroundings. Being exposed to constant noise from the paintball guns, while not loud to humans would seem like a war zone to a horse,” Pelkey-Field wrote. “When insurers assess risk and the cost of insurance, we do so with the broad brush of known and predictable exposures and this new element is going to cause the availability and cost of coverage to be scrutinized to the detriment of the existing equine business.”
“We could hear it and honestly, if that’s as loud as it’s going to get, I probably wouldn’t even be here to talk to you tonight,” said Thompson. “But there were only four markers used and there’s all the boisterous activity – the yelling and screaming – that goes along with it. It’s just the nature of the play, from what I understand.”Coun. Debbie Francis, who owns standardbred racehorses, expressed concerns leading up to the site visit.
“A field edge is a heavily used wildlife buffer area, especially for birds. Is it preventing the birds from going in and out? Are they going to get tangled in it?” Kehoe asked.
