A new study reveals shocking levels of abuse during the 2022 municipal elections, with over 11,000 abusive tweets targeted at candidates.
Doug McCallum, Surrey’s incumbent mayor at the time, didn’t have a Twitter account and wasn’t included in the study.

“But what I will say is the tenor changes when I’m running as a political candidate,” he said. “There are people who won’t run again because of it.” Researchers at the Samara Centre collected 85,537 tweets during the 2022 municipal elections and used a machine learning model to assess abusive language.
“The volumes of abuse … illuminate the challenging working conditions experienced by municipal candidates on the campaign trail,” the study authors wrote.Article content
