Opinion: Vancouver is forced to spend beyond its means to deliver what should be provincial and federal programs — and we are failing the next generation of Vancouverites by putting off important investments in their city.
The report notes that “the city’s housing operations provide safe homes and tenant services at 12 city-owned and B.C. Housing-owned social housing buildings across the city, providing over 1,000 units,” and that “the city also supports housing by providing land for affordable housing,” which costs the city an estimated $70 million per year — not including the estimated $100 million that developers donate in kind, which also costs the city.
Of course, the federal government deserves some blame here, too. Homelessness and addiction in Vancouver are not entirely made-in-B.C. problems. Athat about 50 per cent of Vancouver’s homeless were from another part of Canada. Long on rhetoric, short on action, the feds continue to play politics while people are dying in our streets.
Then there are the more ancillary costs the city must bear — the impacts across city departments of failed or non-existent provincial and federal policies that have created the situation on our streets .
