The Parker Solar Probe successfully completed the closest-ever flyby of the sun, providing valuable data for scientists studying our star.
NASA announced on Friday that its Parker Solar Probe is functioning normally after successfully completing the closest-ever approach to the sun by any human-made object. The spacecraft came within 3.8 million miles (6.1 million km) of the solar surface on December 24th, entering the sun's outer atmosphere known as the corona. This mission aims to provide scientists with a deeper understanding of Earth's closest star.
The agency confirmed that the operations team at the Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory in Maryland received a signal from the probe shortly before midnight on Thursday. Traveling at speeds of up to 430,000 mph (692,000 kph), the spacecraft withstood temperatures reaching 1,800 degrees Fahrenheit (982 degrees Celsius). NASA stated that this close observation of the sun enables the Parker Solar Probe to collect data that helps scientists comprehend how material in this region reaches millions of degrees, trace the origin of the solar wind (a continuous stream of material escaping the Sun), and investigate how energetic particles are accelerated to near light speed. The Parker Solar Probe, launched in 2018, has gradually been spiraling closer to the sun, utilizing flybys of Venus to gravitationally pull it into a tighter orbit
