A dental assistant in Nanoose Bay has been frustrated by a protracted dispute with the federal government, which has left her out of pocket more than $6,000.

Dental assistant Cindy Stewart has no problem cleaning up after her patients each day, but it’s been like pulling teeth for years trying to deal with the federal government.

Weeks after the COVID-19 pandemic took root in Canada in 2020 and her Nanoose Bay dental office closed, Stewart applied for employment insurance (Stewart called EI and cancelled her claim. She was told it was a closed case. The government was then asking for the thousands of dollars back that Stewart never actually received. After nearly a year of trying to get someone on the phone and get answers, she was told that the $6,000 in E.I. payments went into a Royal Bank account she formerly had, but she had since closed. She called her former bank.

“In the meantime, every tax season when I’m supposed to be getting my $1,300 or $1,500 back in my taxes, my refund, they just keep it.”In a statement, Employment and Social Development Canada says outstanding complaints about COVID support programs are now rare, and as of this month, Stewart’s complaint has been resolved. It says a payment is being provided to her for the sums owed.
