John Barsby Secondary alumnus named senior male athlete of the year for 2024
Nanaimo's Olympic hero has added another accolade to go with the gold medal he brought home last summer.
Hammer thrower Ethan Katzberg was named senior male athlete of the year at Sport B.C.'s Athlete of the Year Awards this month. Katzberg threw the hammer 84.12 metres in early August at the 2024 Paris Summer Games, and became the first Canadian to earn a podium spot in more than 100 years. Dylan Armstrong, Katzberg's coach, was also recognized by Sport B.C., taking home the male coach of the year award.
The Sport B.C. awards considered 29 sports across B.C., which displays"the collective strength of province's sports sector," according to Rob Newman, the organization's president and CEO. "We were inspired by the sport stories of all of our finalists, the category winners, and the organizations they represent … We are proud to bring the amateur sport community together and thank our guests, sponsors, and friends in sport," he said in a press release.Last month, Katzberg took home Sports Story of the Year honours at the Nanaimo Sport Achievement Awards.
