Nanaimo Fire Rescue is emphasizing the importance of working smoke alarms in homes ahead of Fire Prevention Week (October 6-12). With a slight increase in fire incidents this year, Chief Tim Doyle stresses that functioning smoke alarms can save lives by providing crucial early warning.
Nanaimo Fire Rescue is asking the public to ensure their smoke alarms are in working order ahead of this year’s Fire Prevention Week Prevention Week Oct. 6-12.
“Smoke alarms save lives,” said Nanaimo fire chief, Tim Doyle. “When you hear a smoke alarm, you may have less than two minutes to get everyone outside and to safety.” Along with participating in the national campaign, the City of Nanaimo has declared October as Emergency Preparedness Month., 301 fire incidents required assistance between 2023-2024, a slight increase from 250 between 2022-2023.
“This is why it is so important to not only make sure your home is equipped with smoke alarms, but to make sure they are working,” said Doyle. This year’s Fire Prevention Week campaign slogan, “Smoke alarms: Make them work for you!” seeks to educate the public on the importance of having working smoke alarms in the home, identifying key installation locations and other important maintenance tips.Install smoke alarms outside each bedroom, and on every floor of the house.Replace smoke alarms every 10 years.recycling depots in NanaimoOn Oct. 23, 2024, Nanaimo Fire Rescue is inviting the public to an open house at 666 Fitzwilliam Street.
