In April last year, the Newfoundland and Labrador Medical Association said there were almost 6,800 backlogged surgeries at the Health Sciences Centre and St. Clare’s Mercy Hospital alone.SaltWire asked NLMA president Dr. Gerard Farrell on Thursday whether that number has changed. He couldn’t provide a number, but he could speak subjectively from his experience working as a doctor.

On Thursday, Health Minister Tom Osborne announced the government will implement all 32 of the task force's recommendations. He said NL Health Services will add a dedicated project manager to oversee their implementation. “The idea that some of these interventions will ever be completed is probably not a reasonable thought.”Farrell said the NLMA welcomes the fact that the government accepted all the recommendations. He said they’re not all easy to do. He also said the recommendations put a lot of emphasis on the community, which is worrisome because those resources are stretched just as thin as hospitals.“The people who are on the waiting list are no closer to their operations.
