Recommendations underway to reduce surgery backlog

Chisholm could offer some approximate numbers for specific categories of surgeries. For example, she said there are about 3,000 people waiting for total hip and knee joint replacements, and about 4,000 backlogged cataract surgeries. “It's very, very difficult to get for our patients the kind of care that we think they deserve in today's environment,” he said.
A couple of examples of those recommendations include repurposing underused beds in personal care and long-term care homes for non-surgical patients who are using hospital beds, and establishing a list of nurses and other health-care professionals who are interested in overtime or additional shifts. While Farrell acknowledged the government has made significant attempts to improve the current health-care situation in the province, he said there’s still a long way to go.
