“It was a bad ending to a crazy story.”
Unlike baseball, two strikes were enough for Indiana, and Holt was kicked off the team while Bryant was disciplined internally.
His first year with the Friars in 2016-17 he played in 32 games with 28 starts, averaged 12.5 points and 5.4 rebounds, and helped get Providence into the First Four at Dayton where, despite Holt’s 18 points and 11 rebounds, the Friars were eliminated 75-71 by USC. Surgery provided some relief, but still, Holt was not getting better. Finally, the decision was made to transport him to Mass General, one of the best hospitals in the world, in an effort to solve the mystery.
Ultimately, the doctors believe he had a perforated colon and they wound up taking eight feet of small intestines out of his body. Holt missed all of the 2017-2018 season, then played six early-season games in 2018-19 but it was clear he wasn’t up to it and he was shut down the rest of that season.
