The chain of events started on Sept. 2, according to an RCMP media release issued Tuesday. Spiritwood RCMP got a report shortly before 1 a.m. of shots fired on the Witchekan Lake First Nation. Police said witnesses reported seeing a man in a grey Pontiac shooting at the driver of a white Ford, of unknown model. On Sept. 5, Spiritwood RCMP got a report of a stolen black Nissan SUV, followed a few hours later by a report that masked people in a vehicle of the same make and colour had stolen gas from a station in Leoville. Police got another report that someone in the SUV had allegedly fired a gun at a resident, who was able to get away without any reported injuries.
Police reportedly caught up with the SUV in a corn field near Witchekan Lake around 11:30 a.m. Monday, where it continued trying to speed away until it caught fire and came to a stop. Officers approaching the scene were advised the driver might have a gun, however, the suspect was eventually arrested without further incident. Police said they later determined he was not involved in the shootings reported earlier in the weekend.
The emergency alert over the Witchekan Lake incident came amid several alerts issued over the long weekend in connection with a mass stabbing incident on the James Smith Cree Nation. Police have since confirmed they do not believe the two incidents are related.Article content Investigators continued working on the file. The emergency alert issued in connection with the case was cancelled Sept. 6. As of Sept. 7 a 31 -year-old man was charged with vehicle theft and breaking and entering, while 22-year-old and 33-year-old suspects are each facing over ten charges, mainly related to firearms offences.Police said Tuesday they believe there is no further threat to public safety.
