Mobile Baykeeper is teaming up with Auburn University Marine Extension and research center to create oyster gardens for restoration efforts. The program aims to combat the decline in oyster population and seeks community participation.
Thu, April 11th 2024 at 6:25 PMWhile some people might be working on their flower gardens this spring, Mobile Baykeeper is preparing oyster gardens .The program is in partnership with the Auburn University Marine Extension and research center. The oysters are not grown and harvested for consumption. In fact, you really do not have to do anything at all. Mobile Baykeeper does the work while you retain full access to your pier.
That is why Mobile Baykeeper needs to borrow your dock. Participation is simple. Mobile Baykeeper manages installation and upkeep. The organization is searching for piers that would be compatible for an oyster garden. P.J Waters is an associate extension professor for Auburn University. He says oyster gardening is not like oyster farming.
The program helps to complete a cycle. According to Waters, as oysters are harvested and consumed in restaurants here in Mobile those shells are then recycled. The young oysters then attach to those recycled shells before they are placed in cages and left for several months under docks and piers. The grown oysters are returned into the bay to join oyster reefs.
