It was barely 9:30 in the morning and the day was still pleasant with so much day left and so many areas to explore.

The beaver ponds on the Little Red are right beside the road up here and, photographically, that’s the best place to shoot them from. The problem is, the road here is very narrow with the pond on one side and a wall of rocks and trees on the other.
Traffic was steady and the dust thick as I drove by Hunter Valley and on northward until I finally came to a road that would take me back eastward again and hung a right turn. But 5 kilometres later, I realized I had, once again, taken the wrong road. My mushroom forest was along Burnt Timber Creek. The road rose to a ridge that had been logged over at some time years ago and from one of the high points I could see across to where the road crested the ridge through a forest of young pines and tall aspens. And on the road stood a whitetail doe and two fawns. They couldn’t have picked a better spot to pose.
Whatever the reason, I hope it doesn’t handicap it too much. Could be a tough winter for the big guy, though.Mike Drew/Postmedia
