America’s arbiters of cool, fashion designer Marc Jacobs has been the face of many trends. But this July, when the perennial enfant terrible, now 58, revealed in a gleeful Instagram post that he’d had a face-lift, just one day into his postoperative recovery, his newly taut mug became the story.
On the recommendation of his younger wife, who underwent a procedure of her own at the same time, Mr. Ballengee turned, like Mr. Jacobs, to Dr. Jacono. “I hated my turkey neck,” he said, referring to the distracting, crepey skin that many men contend with when knotting a tie. “My father also had it and there’s not much you can do for extreme cases other than surgery.”
But if more men are willing to get a face-lift—an investment that, at the high end, can exceed $125,000—in hopes of avoiding being aged out of the workforce, or the conjugal bedroom, it’s not entirely due to significant advances in the surgery itself. “From my perspective, doctors are much better at not feminizing and destroying a man’s face like they did in the ’70s and ’80s because they simply have more male patients,” said Dr. Jacono.
