Clearing two major camps in East and West Oakland, while also getting to know the homeless residents, are Daniel Cooper’s first priorities.
Daniel Cooper grew up in poverty and knows what it’s like to sleep in a car, scavenge for food, shower at the gym and barely scrape by working multiple jobs.
“I’m compassionate because I understand what people are going through,” Cooper said. “And I understand the single mom trying to find a job, trying to do what she can to raise her kids. … I understand an individual who wants to do better for themselves, but it’s like how?” Cooper, a public health expert who most recently worked in county government in North Carolina, was hired to head Oakland’s homelessness initiatives after a year-long search.
