Las Libres, founded by Mexican activist Verónica Cruz to help women and girls who want to end pregnancies, is now getting 100 calls a day — half from Texas.
The year was 2000 and Verónica Cruz was incensed by abortion restrictions for rape victims in her conservative central Mexican state of Guanajuato. In defiance, Cruz formedThat pioneering work of Cruz, now 50, has morphed into a binational network of agencies to help women and girls who want to end pregnancies, mostly with medication abortions. Now, Cruz’s team is seeing a spike in calls from Texans and women around the U.S. since the U.S. Supreme Court struck down Roe vs. Wade on June 24.
Cruz called the sudden cancellation of abortion procedures “brutal” for U.S. women. She took calls from Texas to Mississippi, Oklahoma to Florida. Las Libres consists of 10 paid employees who are also ready to serve as companions, or acompañantas, to advise other women. There are language hurdles, but the team uses translation apps to smooth communications.
Verónica Cruz , a leader of Las Libres, chats with Vanessa Jiménez, an activist with Necesito Abortar in Monterrey, Mexico., emphasized that her network followed protocols for the two-drug regimen established by the World Health Organization. And calls are increasing to the group based in the northern border state of Nuevo Leon.
Nancy Northup, president and CEO of the Center for Reproductive Rights, has called on the Biden administration to declare a public health emergency. That would allow medication abortion pills to get to women and override state laws that make abortions unlawful, Northup said Friday. Women could get the pills through telemedicine from other states or by mail.
