It’s no wonder the Emerald, P.E.I. woman used to work with the Island Waste Management Corporation. She has now taken this passion and interest for the environment and is turning it into a sustainable business.

When asked how long she has been creative, Surkan says forever. She started sewing when she was very young - probably seven or eight years old. Her mom had a Bernina sewing machine, purchased when they lived abroad. Her mother still uses this machine and it’s older than Surkan is.MEET THE MAKERS: Yarmouth resident loves blessing people with her unique creativity

Now that she is a widow, Surkan says there is very little choice for her to run this business. It’s difficult, she says, to find work with her disability and her household income is about a quarter of what it was before her husband passed away. To survive, she feels owning a business, doing what she knows how to do, is the best option moving forward.

The idea of having her own makery business is not a new one. Surkan had always wanted to transition her hobbies into a self-sustainable home-based business. For her, the joy of making is in cracking the challenge of doing something for the first time. And then, just like sampling just one chocolate , you are hooked. She then tries to make the item better or different or figure out how to streamline making several of that same item in less time.
