When asked how long she has been creative, Surkan says forever. She started sewing when she was very young - probably seven or eight years old. Her mom had a Bernina sewing machine, purchased when they lived abroad. Her mother still uses this machine and it’s older than Surkan is.Her mother inspired her and taught her how to sew, starting with doll clothes and little crafts. From there, Surkan excelled in home economics in school. By high school, she made most of her own clothes.
Merie Surkan says this is her favourite quilt she has made. It represents her property with farm animals. The male farmer represents her husband, while the female is herself. Everything is made from scraps of material. Contributed She surfs YouTube if she gets stuck and has joined several online and in-person groups where similar-minded individuals help each other with problems. Their creations often stimulate a need in her to create a similar item but different and unique to her.
