In his 2021 book The Language of Medicine, he wrote about how patients value when physicians listen to them and highlighted the significance of the words doctors use
Dr. Abraham Fuks’s humanistic approach defined every aspect of his life, including his work as a respected Canadian doctor, educator and thinker.
“An attention to the language we use is mandatory if we are to avoid its ill effects on the lives of patients and their capacities to cope with illness,” he wrote. Dr. Fuks died on Dec. 1, at the age of 78. Abe and his parents, Sara and David, immigrated to Montreal when he was two years old to begin a new life. At home, the Fuks family only spoke Yiddish. And while his parents barely had two nickels to rub together, they created a loving and caring home for Abe and Sylvia, who was born six and a half years after her brother.
Dr. David Eidelman, who succeeded Dr. Fuks as dean of McGill’s medical school said Dr. Fuks, was a leader, a mentor, scholar, teacher, role model and friend. He said those who spent time with Dr. Fuks benefited from his thoughtfulness and generosity. The senator described Dr. Fuks as sagacious, saying he carried wisdom, thoughtfulness and determination. Once he set his eyes on a goal, he did everything he could to achieve it, Mr. Kutcher said.
