While it is a small contributor to overall property sales, the payout for property flippers was significant, and the proportion of sales increased in a two-year period.

The numbers released on Nov. 27 are just months ahead of the B.C. government’s BC Home Flipping Tax, “intended to discourage short-term holding of property for profit as part of theOf all property sales in B.C. between 2019 and 2021, less than three per cent came from property flipping sales, which considers properties purchased and resold for income generation within a one-year time frame.

The highest proportion of property flipping within one year of possession occurred in Vancouver, Kelowna, and Victoria.In Vancouver, approximately 2,095 properties were bought and resold during 2021, amounting to 3.2 per cent of all properties sold. In August 2024, the B.C. government announced it’s implementing the BC Home Flipping Tax effective Jan. 1, 2025, with the intention of deterring owners from property flipping.
