Veteran pitcher Max Scherzer joins the Toronto Blue Jays on a one-year deal worth US$15.5 million. The 40-year-old looks to contribute to a Blue Jays rotation seeking to improve after a disappointing 2024 season.
Max Scherzer has agreed to a US$15.5-million, one-year contract with the Toronto Blue Jays , according to a source. The deal is pending a physical. Scherzer, 40, made only nine starts for Texas last year, going 2-4 with a 3.95 ERA. He battled injuries throughout the season, including lower back surgery, shoulder fatigue, and a left hamstring strain. This signing bolsters a Blue Jays rotation that already features Kevin Gausman, Jose Berrios, and Chris Bassitt.
They also have young arms like Bowden Francis and Yariel Rodriguez. The Blue Jays finished last in the AL East with a 74-88 record in 2024. They have struggled to make a deep playoff run, last winning a playoff game in 2016. Scherzer's addition comes after the Blue Jays signed outfielder Anthony Santander to a US$92.5-million, five-year contract earlier this year. The team has been aggressive in their pursuit of star players, also being linked to Shohei Ohtani and Juan Soto in recent years. Scherzer becomes a free agent after completing a US$130-million, three-year contract. He initially signed with the Mets in 2021 but was traded to Texas in 2023. With the Rangers, he won his second World Series title. He also won it all with the Washington Nationals in 2019. Scherzer was drafted by Arizona in the first round of the 2006 amateur draft out of the University of Missouri. He made his MLB debut with the Diamondbacks in 2008. He won his first Cy Young Award with Detroit in 2013 and then won back-to-back NL Cy Young Awards with Washington in 2016 and 2017. Scherzer has a career record of 216-112 with a 3.16 ERA in 466 games, including 457 starts. He has also struck out 3,407 batters in 2,878 innings. He ranks second among active pitchers in strikeouts, wins, and innings pitched, trailing only former teammate Justin Verlander
