The 24-year-old actor plays the titular Jamie in the film, plucked out of 3,500 actors for his first professional film role to tell the story of the long-beloved musical’s. He’s well aware that his breakout turn might come with pressure to stand atop a pedestal for queer communities.
The fact that Max is even thinking about this is evidence of how his life is about to change, and has already changed in a big way. He grew up in the town of Basingstoke, just south of London, and was an “exuberant, creative child,” frequently dressing up in costumes and singing. He started acting in local youth theater productions, which led him to study at the Guildford School of Acting on scholarship. His main acting experience came from a slew of productions in youth theater groups.

As a teen, he worked at a local cinema and would steal movie posters of stars like Jennifer Lawrence and put them under his bed.
While he had never donned drag before the film, Max is a huge fan of the art form — and a super fan of. As he prepared for the role, he was cognizant of the fact that he was playing a budding drag queen without actually being one, taking the responsibility seriously. “I've just been really lucky that loads of the queens have been incredibly supportive, from over the pond in the U.S. and also the latest U.K. seasons, the queens have got in touch.
