The 24-year-old actor plays the titular Jamie in the film, plucked out of 3,500 actors for his first professional film role to tell the story of the long-beloved musical’s. He’s well aware that his breakout turn might come with pressure to stand atop a pedestal for queer communities.

The fact that Max is even thinking about this is evidence of how his life is about to change, and has already changed in a big way. He grew up in the town of Basingstoke, just south of London, and was an “exuberant, creative child,” frequently dressing up in costumes and singing.
