The former central banker, known for his international experience in finance, launched his campaign in Edmonton, Alberta, on January 16, 2025, aiming to succeed Justin Trudeau as party leader. Carney's background paints a picture of a seasoned professional with a diverse set of experiences.
Born in Fort Smith, Northwest Territories, in 1965, he was raised Catholic in Alberta and pursued his education abroad, earning a bachelor's degree from Harvard University and a master's and doctorate from Oxford. His early career saw him working at Goldman Sachs in London, New York, Tokyo, and Toronto, holding senior positions at the Bank of Canada and the Finance department before becoming the governor of the Bank of Canada in 2008.After his tenure at the Bank of Canada, Carney went on to become the governor of the Bank of England in 2013, serving until March 2020. He has consistently advocated for carbon pricing as a solution to combat climate change and has served on various advisory boards, including those of Canada 2020 and the World Economic Forum. Carney has also held key roles at Brookfield Asset Management and Stripe. In preparation for his political campaign, he has resigned from these positions to avoid any potential conflicts of interest. Carney is married to Diana Fox Carney, a climate and finance policy consultant, and they have four daughters.
