Former Bank of Canada and Bank of England Governor Mark Carney is reportedly considering a run for the Liberal party leadership if Prime Minister Justin Trudeau resigns. Calls for Trudeau's resignation have intensified following Chrystia Freeland's recent cabinet resignation, and Carney is seen as a potential replacement by many Liberal MPs.

Mark Carney , the former governor of both the Bank of Canada and the Bank of England, is seriously considering entering a potential Liberal party leadership race if Justin Trudeau resigns, according to sources speaking to CTV News. Calls for Prime Minister Trudeau to step down intensified after Chrystia Freeland 's surprising resignation from cabinet and have continued throughout the holidays, with a majority of Liberal MPs now urging him to vacate office.

In response to a request from regional caucus chairs, CTV News has learned that a national caucus meeting is scheduled for Wednesday where Trudeau will confront his MPs for the first time since stating he would contemplate his future over the winter recess. Since Boxing Day, sources say Carney has engaged in numerous calls with Liberal MPs and political organizers who see him as a viable successor to Trudeau. One source believes Carney's economic expertise would be advantageous in potential tariff negotiations with U.S. president-elect Donald Trump and in bolstering the economic security of Canadians, many of whom have responded to a Conservative message centered on affordability concerns. Speculation regarding Carney's leadership ambitions and efforts by the Trudeau government to recruit him have been circulating for months. Last summer, Trudeau confirmed to reporters that he had been in conversations with Carney about joining federal politics. Subsequently, in September, he informed Freeland during a Friday morning Zoom call that she was losing the finance portfolio. Instead, sources tell CTV News, Trudeau desired her to assume a new role as the government's primary liaison on Canada-U.S. relations while retaining her title as deputy prime minister. A separate Liberal source states that Trudeau informed Freeland he intended to replace her with Carney
