The Toronto Maple Leafs escaped Edmonton with a hard-fought 4-3 victory over the Oilers on Saturday, despite a late surge from the home team. The Leafs looked to be cruising after taking a commanding 3-0 lead in the first period, but the Oilers mounted a furious comeback, pulling within one goal with 8:27 remaining before a coach's challenge negated a potential tying goal late in the third period.

The Toronto Maple Leafs escaped Edmonton with a hard-fought 4-3 victory over the Oilers on Saturday, despite a late surge from the home team. The Leafs looked to be cruising after taking a commanding 3-0 lead in the first period on goals by Matthew Knies, William Nylander, and Bobby McMann. Mitch Marner extended the lead to 4-1 just 18 seconds into the third period.

However, the Oilers mounted a furious comeback, pulling within one goal with 8:27 remaining when Corey Perry scored his 10th of the season. With 2:04 left on the clock, Edmonton looked to have tied the game as Connor McDavid set up Leon Draisaitl for a one-timer top corner shot. However, a coach's challenge revealed that Oilers newcomer John Klingberg was offside on the play, negating the goal. The Oilers continued to press for the equalizer, but Toronto goaltender Joseph Woll stood tall, making a clutch glove save on Perry in the final seconds to preserve the win. The victory snapped a three-game losing streak for the Leafs, who were aided by the return of Knies and John Tavares from injury. However, the team saw defenseman Oliver Ekman-Larsson leave the game with a lower-body injury.Toronto head coach Craig Berube acknowledged the Oilers' late push but expressed disappointment that his team wasn't more aggressive with their lead. 'We did a lot of good things, but I think we could have been more aggressive with the lead,’ Berube said. 'I’m not critiquing the win, because a win’s a win, but I think we could have pushed a little bit more on them. Woll was great, guys battled, it was a battle, playoff-type game, lot of credit to their team, they’ve very good.’ Mitch Marner, who recorded two points in the game, reached 70 points for the season in 52 games, becoming the fastest Toronto player to achieve that feat since Doug Gilmour and Dave Andreychuk in 1993-94
