Toronto Maple Leafs defeat Edmonton Oilers in a thrilling game that came down to the wire. Despite a 3-0 lead early on, the Oilers mounted a strong comeback and almost tied the game in the final minutes. However, a successful coach's challenge for offside negated the Oilers' goal, allowing the Leafs to hold on for the win.
What looked like a cruise control victory for the Toronto Maple Leafs turned into a wild finish and a sigh of relief as they secured a 4-3 win over the Edmonton Oilers on Saturday. After taking a commanding 3-0 lead in the first period with goals from Matthew Knies, William Nylander, and Bobby McMann, and extending the lead to 4-1 just 18 seconds into the third period on a Mitch Marner goal, the Leafs seemed poised for an easy win.
Coming into the game with a 20-0-0 record when leading after 40 minutes, the victory seemed almost guaranteed. However, the Oilers mounted an impressive comeback, even appearing to tie the game with 2:04 remaining in the third period. With the goalie pulled, Connor McDavid sent a pass across to Leon Draisaitl, who cleanly shot the puck into the top corner. But the Oilers' celebration was short-lived. A coach's challenge revealed that Oilers newcomer John Klingberg was offside on the play, negating the goal. Toronto head coach Craig Berube commended his team's composure during the tense moment. 'We couldn’t get quite the angle we wanted so I called a timeout to give them more time and they made a great call,' said Berube. The Oilers continued to press hard, coming close on multiple occasions, but Toronto goaltender Joseph Woll stood tall. He made a remarkable sprawling glove save on Oilers forward Corey Perry in the dying seconds to preserve the Leafs' lead and secure the victory. 'It was just mayhem, guys diving everywhere, trying to get in lanes, trying to block shots, trying to do the best we can to keep the puck out of the net,' said Marner, who recorded two points to become the fastest Toronto player to reach 70 points in a season (52 games) since Doug Gilmour and Dave Andreychuk in 1993-94. Toronto's winning streak snapped a three-game losing skid. While pleased with the win, Berube noted that the Leafs could have been more aggressive with their lead. 'We did a lot of good things, but I think we could have been more aggressive with the lead,' he admitted. 'I’m not critiquing the win, because a win’s a win, but I think we could have pushed a little bit more on them. Woll was great, guys battled, it was a battle, playoff-type game, lot of credit to their team, they’ve very good.' The Leafs were boosted by the returns of Knies and John Tavares from injury, but saw defenseman Oliver Ekman-Larsson leave the game with a lower-body injury.
