The team announced the acquisition of former Stanley Cup champion O’Reilly and centre Noel Acciari in a three-team deal.
The team announced the acquisition of O’Reilly, the Blues captain, and centre Noel Acciari in a three-team deal involving St. Louis and the Minnesota Wild.
O’Reilly is in the final year of a seven-year contract and is owed $7.5 million . The Leafs will only pick up 25 per cent of his remaining salary. The native of Clinton, Ont. has 12 goals and seven assists in 40 games this season. Drafted 33rd by the Colorado Avalanche in 2009, O’Reilly spent six seasons in Colorado before landing in Buffalo for three seasons. The Blues acquired him in a blockbuster deal that sent Patrik Berglund, Vladimir Sobotka, Tage Thompson, a first-round pick and a second-round pick back to Buffalo.
“If there’s a way that we can improve the team and give ourselves a better chance to make a run at it, then we’ll do that,” said Dubas. “The larger focus is always on the bigger names, but we have to look at the people who may improve us overall and not just the big names per se.”
