After alcohol consumption goes up on average among the general population over the holidays, some people choose to participate in Dry January, in which no alcohol is consumed for the month

Some studies show big benefits to alcohol drinkers when they choose to abstain for a month, said Hilary Cutler, manager of Community Wellness for Algoma Public Health.

“It’s interesting to look at it with a long-terms perspective, instead of just for the 30 days,” said Cutler. “There are promising health effects long-term.” A rise in opioid use in Algoma has not meant problems with alcohol have gone away, said Mr. D. “We see that often at our meetings, where people are both and that is a really common thing.”

“That will tell you something right there and they are all reasonably well attended,” said Mr. D. “That’s a lot.”
