The ideas are good, but too small to bring down housing costs for average middle class families trying to buy their first home.
Removing the GST from purpose built rentals is also a good idea. It should be done to spark construction, but it’s not the type of policy that will give middle class families the dream of home ownership.
Let’s be honest, Trudeau has campaigned on making housing more affordable since 2015. In each election platform and in his budgets, Trudeau and his government have promised to make housing more affordable. Instead, rents have doubled and so has the price of homes.Article contentNow that he’s down in the polls, Trudeau is saying he’s ready to act with old ideas that should have delivered already but haven’t.
If he wanted to implement real action on housing plans to get homes built faster, he has no end of solid, doable proposals. Instead, he’s still going slow. He could use some of the ideas he heard from the housing experts who addressed the Liberal cabinet in Charlottetown last month, or he could start stealing ideas from Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre.
He’s also promising that he would sell off surplus land and buildings for housing development to kickstart construction. None of these are inherently Conservative ideas, they are common sense ideas and one that Trudeau should start stealing.
