From brianlilley: Making sense of union demands as a civil service strike looms cdnpoli

Beyond the wage increase, however, it’s the other issues which will drive the union demands off the charts. One of the demands is that anyone who works after 4 p.m. should be paid $2.50 per hour shift premium. The actual ask is for that shift premium to apply to anyone working between 4.p.m. and 8 a.m., meaning if your shift is 9-5, your last hour would include a $2.50 shift premium.

Another attempt at a cash grab is the union’s demand that the federal government “shall contribute one cent per hour worked to the PSAC Social Justice Fund.” That may not sound like much, but just a penny per hour for more than 155,000 federal workers comes in at more than $3 million per year so taxpayers can pay for the very political objectives of the union.Article content

Funding union pet projects like this training or their demand for a $3-million slush fund isn’t something taxpayers should be asked to do.There have also been bizarre demands related to working from home, something the unions want to continue, while the union representing tax workers were also demanding that a meal penalty still be in place for workers who put in overtime while at home.
