Plan to get faster access to cataract surgery, MRIs, hip and knee surgery has backing of doctors, hospital executives and medical experts.
The plan, to be implemented over three steps, will see community clinics — both private and not-for-profit — begin expanding their surgical capacity this year. Ontario currently performs about 3% of surgical procedures outside of hospital settings while British Columbia and Alberta both hover around the 20% mark. Quebec is also moving in this direction and began contracting out surgeries to be performed in private community clinics during the pandemic.
