OTTAWA — The federal government is increasing the number of refugees it plans to resettle as a result of Sudan's civil war, with changes that could see 7,000 more people reach Canada through various programs.

OTTAWA — The federal government is increasing the number of refugees it plans to resettle as a result of Sudan's civil war, with changes that could see 7,000 more people reach Canada through various programs.

The federal policy suggests that Quebec is not allowing families to bring their relatives to the province, and the office of Quebec Immigration Minister Jean-François Roberge did not have an immediate comment. Violence has swept through most of Sudan since April 2023, when competing government troops took up arms against each other, leading to what the United Nations has called the world's largest displacement crisis and what Washington has described as a genocide in the Darfur region.
