The former banker won the Liberal stronghold seat held by former premier Kathleen Wynne since 2003, beating the high-profile PC candidate.

“We’re thrilled to keep this riding Liberal and continue the great work that did in her time in office,” said Bowman, who won nearly 44 per cent of the vote with 47 of 49 polls reporting.

But while the riding has gone to the Liberals for nearly two decades — ever since Wynne was first elected in 2003 — Bowman wasn’t exactly a shoo-in. Saunders made history as Toronto’s first Black police chief, holding the position from 2015 until his resignation in 2020, and was subsequently appointed to Ontario’sBut his name was not enough to topple the Liberals’ grip on the riding, which encompasses several income brackets and neighbourhoods including York Mills, Leaside, Davisville Village, Thorncliffe and York Mills.

Having lived in Don Valley West for more than 25 years, Bowman has acknowledged she has “very big shoes to fill” in replacing Wynne. In one video posted to his Twitter account, the former officer said he wanted “more affordable housing for families, parents and young adults. More jobs and access to opportunities for jobs including a community centre with recreational space.”
